Since June 1, 1861, General Pierre G.T. Beauregard had been positioned 29 miles southwest of Washington, DC, to protect the vital rail junction at Manassas, located a few miles west of a dark sluggish stream (Bull Run) that eventually joined the Potomac River. Southeast of the railroad junction was the 3,000-man brigade of General T.H. Holmes, based at Marlboro Point.
