L. Lurleen Essmeier of Florence died on October 14, 2011 in Colorado Springs at the ags of 97. She was born April 21, 1914 near Yates Center, KS. At age 6, her family loaded their belongings onto a railroad box car and relocated to a homestead 15 miles east of Walsenburg, CO. They remained on the homestead until 1927. Removal of railroad crossing discussed
Florence -- Moving the railroad crossing will cost more than originally thought, but after discussing the project, the Florence City Council approved task Order No. 2 for $24,200 to Drexel, Barrell & Co., contingent upon acquiring the rest of the funding, which will be between $100,000 and $400,000. |

Rickwood Road to close Friday
Staff reports A portion of Rickwood Road in Florence will be closed to traffic from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday to allow contractors to install a new storm drainage system across the road. Rickwood Road will be closed from Railroad Avenue to Helton Drive, said Kevin Evers, a construction engineer with the Alabama Department of Transportation. |
