New rolling stock (carriages) for South Island scenic rail journeys are as good as, or better than anything I have experienced anywhere else. They rival equipment used on Switzerland's premier scenic rail journeys, including the famed Zermatt to St Moritz Glacier Express. And, best of all, the new rail vehicles, classified AK, are New Zealand-designed and built. |

Transportation Secretary Meeting With Aviation, Construction Communities
U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood is taking a train ride in Alaska on Tuesday. The Secretary will ride the Alaska Railroad to the Spencer Glacier from Anchorage, stop at Girdwood for a meeting about safety concerns on the Seward Highway, and then on to the whistle stop at the glacier. |

Stimulus money goes to depot upgrades
Raising the 550-foot long platform at the Whitefish train depot by eight inches will make loading and unloading easier for people with disabilities. Additional work will be done at the West Glacier train station. |

Twilight of the Glaciers
AN hour or so up ahead, at the higher elevations along the trail that leads over Siyeh Pass, huckleberries were ripening.
