My great-grandfather, James Polk Byrne, was born in what is now Putnam County in 1842. He and two of his brothers, Robert and George, enlisted in the Confederate army at Granville, Tenn., in June 1861. They were trained at Camp Trousdale and became part of the 17th Tennessee Infantry CSA.
